Rat (born in 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032, 2044)
The Chinese zodiac consists of 12 animals, one of these being the Rat.  Legend tells us that 12 animals quarreled as to who would get to be the first animal in the calendar.  Unable to decide among themselves, they asked the Gods to assist.  To make the determination, the Gods devised a contest in which all the animals would swim to the opposite side of the river.  The animal getting to the shore first would win.  However, as the animals jumped into the water, unbeknownst to the ox, the rat hopped a ride on his back.  As the ox neared the other side, the rat jumped off, becoming the first animal in the Chinese zodiac with the ox coming in second.
